Observing the Observers.

We are an independent documentation collective dedicated to First Amendment auditing in Los Angeles. Holding power accountable through unfiltered, unscripted journalism.

Our Directive

Transparency through raw documentation.

LA Public Eye operates on a foundational constitutional premise: if an action is performed by a public servant in a public space, it belongs on the public record. We actively document police officers, city officials, and public workers executing their duties across Los Angeles County.

Our presence ensures that civil rights are respected, correct legal procedures are followed, and interactions remain strictly professional. We do not interfere with operations; we simply observe. The unblinking camera is the most powerful tool for civic accountability.

Unedited Integrity

We provide uncut, raw footage. No deceptive editing, no manufactured narratives. Just the reality of the streets.

Community Backed

100% independent. We rely on constitutional protections and the support of the citizens of Los Angeles to operate.

The Law

Your Right to Record

In the United States, there is a clearly established First Amendment right to record police officers and other public officials carrying out their duties in a public place.

  • You have the constitutionally protected right to film in traditional public forums (sidewalks, parks, public lobbies).
  • Law enforcement cannot legally confiscate your phone or recording equipment without a warrant.
  • Police cannot demand you delete footage under any circumstances. Deleting footage can be considered destruction of evidence.
  • You must not physically interfere with law enforcement operations while filming. Maintain a reasonable, safe distance.

Educational observation only. Not legal advice.
